らしい vs みたいだ — is there an actual rule?

I keep mixing these two up. Both get translated as "seems/apparently" in my textbook glossary but that can't be the whole story. Is らしい specifically for stuff you heard secondhand (like from news or rumor), while みたいだ is more about what YOU personally observe and infer? Or is there overlap where either works? Looking for the actual decision rule, not just "they're similar."

Your instinct is right. らしい marks hearsay — info from an outside source (heard it, read it, rumor). 彼はインフルエンザらしい = "I heard he has the flu" (someone told you). みたいだ is about resemblance/appearance based on what's in front of you — 彼女は病気みたいだ = "she looks sick" (you're seeing her pale face right now). So the split is source: secondhand report vs your own sensory impression.
