かねる vs かねない — don't let the negative-looking ない fool you

Quick trap for anyone drilling N2: 「言いかねる」= 'hard to say / I can't quite say it' (negative-feeling but grammatically NOT negation), while 「言いかねない」= 'might well say [something bad]' — a warning about a possible bad outcome. The ない in かねない is NOT the negative suffix; it's baked into the word かねない itself, which means 'can't rule out.' So a sentence like 「あの人なら平気で嘘をつきかねない」means 'that person might well lie without hesitation' — it's a suspicion, not a compliment.
