どころか vs ばかりか — both feel like 'not only... but'?

「彼は日本語が上手どころか、英語もペラペラだ」and 「彼は日本語が上手なばかりか、英語もペラペラだ」both seem to translate as 'not only is he good at Japanese, he's also fluent in English.' Is there actually a meaningful difference or are these interchangeable in casual use?

There's a real gap. ばかりか is purely additive — both parts point the same direction, adding up ('good at Japanese' + 'also fluent in English', both positive, no contradiction). どころか carries a built-in 'reality is even further from/beyond expectation than you'd think' snap — it often REJECTS an implied lower assumption. Classic example: 「安いどころか、むしろ高い」= 'far from cheap, it's actually expensive' — that's a flat reversal, which ばかりか cannot do. In your sentence both work because 'fluent in English' doesn't contradict 'good at Japanese,' but swap in a reversal and only どころか survives.
