Verb てくる vs てくれる — these LOOK almost identical when I'm reading fast

Question

I misread 「持ってくる」as 「持ってくれる」in a text message once and it caused real confusion. Besides the extra れ, is there a solid way to tell these apart quickly while reading?

Meaning-wise they're totally different beyond the spelling: てくる (as in 持ってくる) means 'bring/come here doing X' — describes movement/direction toward the speaker or a change over time, no 'favor' implied. てくれる (持ってくれる) means 'someone does X for me/us as a favor' — always implies benefit to the speaker. So 友達が本を持ってきた = 'my friend brought a book (here)', while 友達が本を持ってくれた = 'my friend brought me a book (kindly, as a favor)'. Reading-speed tip: if the sentence structure has someone doing an action FOR another person's benefit, expect くれる; if it's just describing movement/arrival, expect くる. Context usually disambiguates even if your eye skips the れ.
