I think I've got the pattern: い-adjectives drop い and add く before する/なる, な-adjectives just add に before する/なる. Is that literally the whole rule, or are there exceptions I should watch for?

That's the whole rule for regular adjectives, yes — 大きい→大きく, 静か→静かに, then add する ('make it [adjective]') or なる ('it becomes [adjective]'). The one common trap is いい/よい (good), which conjugates irregularly to よく instead of いく: 天気がよくなりました ('the weather got better'), never 天気がいくなりました. Also remember する needs an object with を (部屋をきれいにする, 'to make the room clean') while なる's subject takes が or は (部屋がきれいになる, 'the room becomes clean') — that part trips people up more than the adjective conjugation itself.
