PSA: かねない is a warning word, not a neutral "might"

Quick tip after seeing a few people (myself included, a while back) misuse this one. ～かねない only expresses the likelihood of a NEGATIVE or undesirable outcome — think "this could end badly." It attaches to the verb stem, e.g. 破りかねない ("might end up breaking [a promise]"), 起こしかねない ("might cause [an accident]"). If the outcome you're describing is neutral or good, reach for ～かもしれない instead. Saying something like 成功しかねない to mean "might succeed" is a real head-scratcher for native speakers — it reads as if success were the bad news.
