Noun に行きます vs Verb に行きます — same に different job?

Question

I understand 「学校に行きます」= going to school (Noun に 行きます). But then I saw 「公園に遊びに行きます」and got confused because there's a verb stem before 行きます too. Is に doing something different in each sentence, or is this basically two separate patterns that happen to share the word 行きます?

Two separate patterns, good catch. Pattern 1: Noun + に + 行きます = simply "go to [place]" (学校に行きます = go to school). Pattern 2: Verb ます-stem + に + 行きます = "go (somewhere) IN ORDER TO do [action]" (公園に遊びに行きます = go to the park in order to play — 遊び is the ます-stem of 遊ぶ). So in 公園に遊びに行きます, the FIRST に marks the destination (公園に), and the SECOND に attaches to the verb stem to mark purpose. Two に's, two different jobs, in the same sentence! Same idea with a suru-verb: 図書館に勉強しに行きます (勉強し is the stem after dropping する).
