How I finally stopped confusing ように (purpose) from ように (as/like)

毎日単語を覚えるようにしています = 'I make an effort to memorize words daily' (purpose/goal) vs 前に言ったように = 'as I said before' (manner/comparison). The trick that worked for me: if the sentence is about EFFORT toward a future goal, it's the purpose one. If it's pointing back at something already established, it's the manner one. Sharing in case it helps someone else who was stuck like I was.
