Formal announcements: を持って vs をもって — same word, different feel?

I keep seeing 「本日をもって終了とさせていただきます」on official notices. Grammar deck lists Noun+をもって as 'means, method, or time — with, by means of, at.' Is writing it in kanji (を持って) ever correct here, or is that always a mistake for this grammatical usage?
