一方 (contrast) and 一方だ (only getting worse) look identical — how do you tell them apart while reading fast?

「この薬は効果がある一方、副作用も強い」(contrast, 'while... on the other hand') versus「少子化は進む一方だ」(only-getting-worse trend). Same string 一方 but completely different grammar. Is there a reliable tell before you reach the end of the sentence, or do you just have to read the whole thing and infer from context?

The tell is structural: contrastive 一方 needs TWO clauses (A一方、B) — it's a connector sitting between two full statements, so you'll see a comma/読点 right after it and then a second subject+predicate. 一方だ is a sentence-ENDER attached directly to a single verb in dictionary form (進む一方だ, 増える一方だ) — nothing follows it grammatically except maybe です/だ. So practically: if 一方 comes right before a comma with more sentence after, it's contrast; if it's followed immediately by だ/です and a period, it's the 'only increasingly X' pattern. Also 一方だ almost always pairs with verbs of change (増える, 減る, 悪化する, 進む) — you rarely see it attached to a static verb.
